DJVU to PDF eBook converter

The freeware tool is intended to convert DjVu documents (or, as an option, scanned images) to "ebook-reader-friendly" PDF format. It addresses the major restrictions of popular electronic ink displays: relatively small dimensions and limited levels of gray scale.

The tool is written in Java and instantly available for download as automatic installers for MS Windows 32bit JDK/JRE and MacOS 64bit JDK/JRE platforms. If you are interested to run the tool on UNIX/Linux or other species of Windows or Macos, you need to obtain a corresponding swt.jar library from the site

The tool user interface is straightforward and, hopefully, self explaining.

Below there are some notes and hints.

  • The converter does not unleash all the power of DjVu format. It extracts DjVu pages as images, converts them to JPEG and embeds to PDF. For DjVu scans of old books or magazines it is more than enough.

  • Blue numeric labels are editable.

  • You may use cursor buttons left and right as well as PgUp and PgDn for document browsing.

  • By default there are only 2 output device types: Sony PRS-505 and Apple iPad. You may either specify custom dimensions, match your device resolution, or to permanently add your target device type to converter.properties file (can be fount in the installation directory):

    device.2=Apple mini-iPad,600,800

  • The absolute pixel values, you give for the device screen resolution, do not matter to some extend. PDF viewer software will scale the document if needed. It is much more important to provide a correct aspect ratio of the "working area". BTW: Actual screen resolution of Sony PRS-505 is not 456x600. But there is always a status bar on the device screen, which changes the actual aspect ratio. A wrong dependency between height and width results blank top-border or left-right areas.

  • "Split and rotate" page layout produces from a single DjVu page 2 PDF pages to be read in landscape device orientation. Recommended for documents result unreadable tiny font sizes on the target device.

  • Use "Double-page scan" option if the source document is a sequence of scanned double-page spreads.

  • Threshold control allows to make gray texts black and dirty gray backgrounds white. It is extremely important for devices with limited gray scale range.

  • If slider ranges (threshold or margin controls) are not sufficient, you may adjust their max values in the converter.properties file.

  • Page navigation allows to browse DjVu pages one by one. If you need to jump to a particular page, put the focus on the page counter, type the desired page number and click Enter.

  • You may always terminate a document conversion process with "Cancel" button. The resulting PDF document is still going to be valid (but, of course, with fewer than expected pages)

New in version 2011.03

  • PNG-8 image output mode as an option to make resulting PDF more compact
  • By pressing SHIFT key the application allows to open a directory with scanned page images (instead of a DJVU file)
  • Now the applciation can output resulting document as a set of page images

Multiplatform CHM-to-PDF converter is coming soon!

Legal Notes

The converter tool is not based on PD4ML technologies only. It uses open source iText PDF and Lizardtech DjVu libraries. We also released the tool as open source under AGPL license. The source code can be found packed to JAR with the Java class files.
